Thunder kart spec
Introduction

We drove many karts from different manufacturers before we made a decision. We weren’t looking for the best deal or the strongest heaviest kart, but the best driving experience. As such we chose the race chassis Thunderkart from Biz combined with the 390cc Honda Thunder engine, a lighter kart with a more sensitive and progressive response to driver input, particularly at speed. In comparison to the more commonly found rental/corporate chassis, the race chassis ultimately gives a much more rewarding karting experience. The engine produces 13bhp and is big on torque ultimately propelling the kart to speeds in excess of 55mph which are achievable on the kart circuit.

The 390cc Honda Thunder engine produces 13 bhp and is big on torque (the measure of an engines ability to accelerate). When compared with a Pro Kart, it is this feature along with the more nimble chassis that is most immediately felt difference. Pick up from low/medium revs is very important and allows the driver to adjust the karts balance through the corners. Geared to reach a top speed at Thruxton of between 55 and 60 mph they produce close exciting racing.

Dashboard telemetry

Real time information is essential in any race situation, especially karting. We use the latest ROCTIMING system, which has many features including:

Digital dash mounted on each kart, this displays:

  • Race position
  • Time to next kart
  • Laps or time remaining
  • Current lap time

Multiple information monitors in the kart centre for guests and team members, displays

  • Race position
  • Time to next kart
  • Number of laps completed and remaining
  • Race time
  • Fastest lap for each kart

Kart mounted digital dash - lists the same information as above but for your kart only. It will show each lap time so you know if altering you line has resulted in a faster lap. It is particularly useful to know the gap to the next kart in longer races as the field spreads out. You will also know the time to the next driver change (this can be depressing information if your arms feel like they are about to drop off).

Timing system

Constantly updated information is essential in any race situation particularly the enduro format. We use the latest ROCTIMING system, which has many features including:

• Multiple information monitors in the kart centre for team members and crew. These list race position, time difference to next kart, number of laps, elapsed race time and fastest lap for each kart.

Added electonic equipment

• Pit to driver message board situated on the start/finish line. Send specific messages to your kart via this electronic message board.
• Pit lane speed limiter. Fitted to each kart and automatically governed within a preset area. Keeps pit lane sage and stops the temptation to gain time in the pit lane.
• Automatic Sin Bin. If you have been misbehaving on track the message board will indicate for you to return to the Sin Bin. You will be automatically counted down when you arrive. The system knows if you left the Sin Bin early!
All the above adds to the fun of racing and allows you to plan or alter race strategy as the race progresses.
